The story takes place in the Sengoku Era of Japan. Half Demon Inuyasha had been pinned to the Tree of Ages by his former lover, Priestess Kikyo, in an attempt to steal the Shikon no Tama, the Jewel of Four Souls. A present day school girl, Kagome, finds herself caught in a bind with a demon at her family shrine, the demon had pulled Kagome down through the familys well, Kagome fought off the demon with powers she never knew she had, unknowingly, the Shikon no Tama was embedded in Kagomes side, which is what the demon desired. The demon had pulled Kagome into the Feudal Era of Japan, and Kagome was stuck in a world she knew nothing about. In a desperate attempt to save Kagomes life, Kagome had unpinned Inuyasha from the tree, which no one else had the power to do. Later on Inuyasha finds out that he had been pinned to the Sacred Tree for fifty years and that Kikyo had died shortly after his death, and Kikyo demanded that the Shikon Jewel would be burned with her body, which leads to the conclusion that Kagome is Kikyos reincarnation. The jewel became in possession of a demon bird, while trying to retrieve it Kagome had accidentally shattered the jewel into tiny fragments and the shards scattered across Japan. With one shard of the jewel one being could become stronger, so it is important that Inuyasha and Kagome work together to retrieve all the shards. Inuyasha wants the jewel for himself, and only joined forces with Kagome since she's the only one who can sense the jewel shards.
